The Martin D-13E Retro Walnut proves that black walnut is the new reference wood for the discerning dreadnought player
Martin calls black walnut "Pennsylvania rosewood" for a reason. The D-13E Retro Walnut is an instrument that fully lives up to that nickname: a dreadnought with character, warmth, and a tonal balance you wouldn't expect in the Road Series. This is a guitar that looks beyond the beaten path of spruce and mahogany.
The combination of a solid spruce top with solid black walnut back and sides in a gloss finish delivers a tone that immediately stands out: rich bass, clear highs, and a complexity in the midrange that makes walnut so distinct from other tonewoods. The scalloped X-bracing provides powerful projection and a dynamic response that reacts well to both strong strumming and nuanced fingerpicking. The Martin E1 electronics with built-in tuner make the transition to amplified playing simple and reliable.
The Performing Artist neck with high-performance taper and a 25.4" scale plays smoothly and comfortably, even in higher positions thanks to the 16" radius. The ebony fretboard has 20 frets with white dot inlays, and the nickel open-gear tuners and dovetail neck joint align with the Style 28-inspired detailing that visually elevates this model above its class. Delivered with a soft case.
For the guitarist who is ready for an instrument with its own voice and isn't satisfied with the obvious.
