When we see a Gibson SG Special, we immediately think of Santana's legendary Woodstock performance. Its biting, soulful and rock & roll-infused sound was in part due to this monstrously cool instrument, and this Gibson Custom Shop 1963 SG Special Historic Reissue is a worthy homage to the sixties original. Everything is right about this reissue, starting with the Cherry Red color that has become synonymous with the SG over the years. The whole is finished in Gibson's own Nitrocellulose VOS Vintage Patina lacquer, which makes the guitar look, feel and smell like it actually comes from the 1960s. The body and neck are made of mahogany, and the whole thing is completed by an Indian Rosewood fingerboard - including Pearloid Dot inlay. The bridge is - as befits an SG Special - a Lightning Bar Wraparound bridge (instead of the TOM bridges we saw on the SG Standard). This produces a unique tone and wonderful playability. Speaking of tone, the Custom Soapbar P-90 pickups in this guitar sound great! No nonsense, a delicious bite and an extremely large dynamic range. Other noteworthy features include Kluson Single Line tuners with white buttons, an authentic '63 Medium C-Shape neck profile that feels incredibly comfortable in the hand, and period-correct 500K CTS potentiometers with hand-wired harness.
