Gibson J-160E Original Vintage Sunburst with P-90 DC Element!
The Gibson J-160E is an absolute legend. For many guitarists, this model needs no introduction, but for those unfamiliar with its history, there's only one name to remember: The Beatles . The J-160E was inextricably linked to their early years and can be seen and heard on countless recordings, including their iconic first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show . This is the guitar that helped shape the sound of a generation.
The original J-160E was introduced in 1954 and was only the second Gibson acoustic model to feature built-in electronics. Its signature, uncovered P-90 pickup was mounted directly into the top, just below the fingerboard. While its body shape is reminiscent of the Southern Jumbo and J-45™, the J-160E was conceived from the outset as a versatile workhorse guitar: suitable for both acoustic and electric use, with a clear focus on amplified playing.
With the J-160E Original, Gibson now offers a modern interpretation of this classic. Based on the vintage models, but refined with thoughtful updates that elevate both acoustic and electric performance.
The back and sides are crafted from solid mahogany, which adds warmth and focus to the tone. In contrast to the laminated tops and ladder bracing of the original models, the J-160E Original features a solid Sitka spruce top with traditional scalloped X-bracing. The result is a full, open, and rounded acoustic tone when played unamplified – exactly what you'd expect from a modern Gibson.
The mahogany neck has a comfortable and fast SlimTaper™ profile and is attached at the 15th fret with Gibson's compound dovetail joint. As with all Gibson acoustic guitars, hot hide glue is used here, ensuring optimal resonance and maximum vibration transfer. The bound rosewood fingerboard features 20 frets and classic pearloid trapezoid inlays.
The rosewood belly-up bridge features a bone saddle and TUSQ® bridge pins, while the nut is also made of bone. Nickel Gotoh® Keystone tuners ensure stable and accurate tuning, so you'll spend less time tuning and more time playing.
Like its historic predecessors, the J-160E Original is naturally equipped with a pickup. Instead of the traditional P-90, a P-90 DC pickup has been chosen: the same recognizable P-90 tone and dynamics, but without the hum. The pickup is connected to top-mounted volume and tone controls with stylish 60s gold Top Hat knobs with silver reflectors, and a side-mounted output jack. Ideal for noise-free playing on stage or in the studio.
