The Sandberg Florence: a short-scale bass translating seventies soul into modern craftsmanship
With the Florence, Sandberg introduces a short-scale bass that resolutely prioritizes character over compromise. Its 30" scale makes it exceptionally playable and comfortable, but it's the tone that truly impresses: thick, warm, and full, with a presence that instantly transports you back to the fattest bass sounds of the seventies. This isn't a nostalgia project; it's an instrument that proudly wears its retro DNA.
The alder body gives the Florence an open, balanced tone with a natural attack. The bolt-on mahogany neck adds warmth and sustain, while the rosewood fretboard with dot inlays offers a familiar playing experience. The single Power Humbucker is positioned precisely in the body's sweet spot, resulting in maximum sustain and a full, round midrange that convinces both in the mix and solo. Whether you're using a swampy Ampeg or a punchy Eich amplifier, the Florence adapts effortlessly.
The electronics are deliberately simple: a volume and tone control, complemented by a push/pull function that activates two different tone cuts. This provides more tonal shaping possibilities than the minimalist setup suggests. The hardware is Sandberg's own, executed in chrome, and the British Racing Green finish with a Soft Aged treatment gives the Florence a timeless look. The bass comes with a gig bag.
For the bassist who consciously chooses a short-scale with a big sound and a striking finish, the Sandberg Florence is an instrument that effortlessly justifies itself.
